There was a horrible incident on the weekend that has torn a hole in my family.
My sister's beloved Pipa was hit by a car that was going much too fast... The driver left her on the side of the road and took off before anyone could do anything - there are many witnesses to this event, but none got a license plate.... The pup, fuelled by fear and adrenaline, ran away - over 2.5 kms from home in Edmonton's busy north side.
It took us 3 hours, and a massive manpower effort, to locate her. She has been at the vets since Sunday, with the major amount of internal damage done. She has ruptured alveoli, causing her chest cavity to fill with oxygen that is not transferring to her red blood cells as it should. The pressure this has caused in her chest cavity effected the placement of her heart and suffering from collapsed lungs was a real threat. Her liver and lungs are bruised and they pulled over 30 litres of oxygen out of her chest cavity with a tube. Once they started doing this, blood started filling up in the chest cavity instead of oxygen, meaning internal bleeding somewhere... She was not expected to make it through the night…
She has since blown away the veterinarians with her resilience and will to live and is hoped to be released on Thursday!!
A huge thank you is owed to the staff at VetEmerg- Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital for their efforts, to all the friends and family for their positive thoughts and prayers, and to Amelia Gregresh. A complete stranger, now my sisters angel, who found Pipa on the side of the highway and called the City of Edmonton to find my sister. She stayed with Pipa until we got there to bring her to the 24-hour vet clinic.
I was with my sister that entire first night Pipa was in the clinic fighting for her life and I can tell you that this dog means the world to my sister. I haven't seen such grief in someone since the day my oldest sister passed away. Pipa grows stronger every day, but the bills have already amassed to several thousands of dollars and the road to recovery is far from over.
Pipa came into Mandee's life one year ago as a rescue who was found living in a dump station up north and was taken into a foster home. Mandee decided she wanted to adopt a fur baby and when she came across Pip - she was in love. It didn't take long for the papers to be signed and for this little girl to come home. She is such an energetic, fun loving and beautiful girl who has stollen my sisters heart and changed her life so much - anyone who knows them knows they were meant to cross each other's path, be in each other's lives and to help each other's heart be full. They have both thrived over the past year.
I want to help my sister as much as I can. I am offering 30-minute pet photography sessions June 19th through June 25th from 9am to 5pm. You pick what you wish to pay for the session (includes 5 professionally photographed & retouched images of your fur baby) and 100% of the donations will go towards paying Pipa’s vet bills.
If this is something you are interested in, please contact me to find out more information on this offer and to book in your session.
We all love our fur babies unconditionally so please slow down when driving. Think of others and hold and kiss your fur babies and pray for Pipa to have a strong recovery.
